Current Trends in Childhood Psychiatric Diagnosis

Childhood and adolescent mental health presentations have shifted dramatically over recent decades, with a noticeable increase in psychiatric diagnoses—particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. This insightful talk explores the evolving landscape of childhood psychopathology and invites clinicians to critically reflect on how diagnosis is shaped by cultural, developmental, and environmental contexts.

Drawing on evidence-based research, psychoanalytic theory, and rich clinical experience, this presentation helps psychologists better understand the meaning behind behavioural and emotional symptoms, avoid diagnostic pitfalls, and support families with appropriate, nuanced interventions.

Psychologists will gain practical and theoretical knowledge to inform their case formulation, diagnostic thinking, and treatment planning when working with young clients in today’s complex social climate
